War Plays by Women, edited by Claire M. Tylee with Elain Turner and Agnes Cardinal is a welcome addition to the field of rediscovered women’s writing, mostly concerned with World War One; moreover this is an anthology of women’s writing for the theatre that has not been easily available to all readers. I say readers, because the performance history of some of these plays is not at all clear, and some have never been performed, and therefore have not stood the test of audience response nor the social function for which they were presumably intended. (There are three illustrations of actual theatre productions and one film version).
