The general editor to this new scholarly edition of the novels of Thomas Love Peacock notes in the introduction that this is the second time that an attempt to install Peacock as a literary classic – or even just to revive readerly as well as academic interest in him – is paralleled by a major edition of his contemporary and fellow novelist Jane Austen, a comparison that throws into relief the different fates these two writers have had in the last two hundred years. The existence of careful and weighty scholarly editions of both writer’s works testify that they are equally regarded as being worthy of academic interest and conservation.
