This collection reflects the interests and accomplishments of the scholar and teacher it honours – Jill Levenson, a long-time distinguished professor at Trinity College, University of Toronto – Shakespeare, adaptation, and modern drama. The editors, Randall Martin and Katherine Scheil, emphasize adaptation as the connection between the fields of Shakespeare and modern drama (p. 4). They also stress the role of scholarly reinterpretation as a contribution to creative adaptation (p. 20). This volume is a pretext for innovative discussions of early modern and modern plays by important scholars in those fields. Discussing a multi-authored volume means that I can only touch upon significant contributions that each essay makes to the collection.
