This is a new edition of a Victorian classic. It consists of 75 quatrains (“ruba¯‘iya¯t”) praising worldly enjoyment and refuting otherworldly aspirations, which Edward Fitzgerald shaped into English verse from a Persian manuscript in the Bodleian library in 1859, and which became immensely popular in the 1870s. Added to this is Karlin’s valuable 54-page introduction, the author’s preface and notes, a critical apparatus of the five editions published before the author’s death, five responses to the book in the author’s lifetime, Tennyson’s poem about it, and the editor’s notes.
