This collection “based on a selection of papers originally delivered at the Eighth York Manuscript Conference (5-7 July 1996)” (p. xi) is a most fitting tribute to Derek Pearsall who has perhaps done more for the broadening and enlivening of Middle English studies than anyone of his generation. York’s Centre for Medieval Studies, established by him together with the late Elizabeth Salter, has produced an invaluable, rich harvest of groundbreaking studies as well as a most impressive array of original and influential scholars. The editions, monographs and anthologies completed by Derek Pearsall singlehandedly alone form a substantial library, almost sufficient for a first sound introduction to the chief texts and methods of the discipline.
