“Doch trotz einer Vielzahl an Versuchen muß es bis heute als zentrale Herausforderung interdisziplinärer Forschung gelten, den Körper zu denken.” (p. 7) Thus the editor Anne Fleig marks the thrust of the criticism collected in this volume which originated in lectures given by Anne Fleig, Erika Fischer-Lichte, Manfred Pfister, Gert Mattenklott, Bonnie Marranca, Gernot Böhme, Stanca Scholz-Cionca, Gunter Gebauer and Dietmar Kamper at the Freie Universiät Berlin during the summer term of 1998. Giving a brief summary of the current state of interdisciplinary studies on the body (reflecting its flicker between linguistic, i.e. social construction and the extra-linguistic “real”) in her introduction “Körper-Inszenierungen: Begriff, Geschichte, kulturelle Praxis,” Fleig fixes the theoretical positions of the contributions between two poles: one part is dedicated to the analysis of physical presence and its construction in different media, i.e. bodies in narrative prose, theatrical performance and TV; the second part is dedicated to the examination of cultural changes in the imagery of physical presence, e.g. changes in body language and its meanings.
