This is an interesting and thorough study of poetry from both parts of Ireland, North and South, since 1950. Beginning with earlier writers such as Austin Clarke and Patrick Kavanagh, it moves through well-known names such as Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley and Derek Mahon to most recent figures such as Tom Paulin and Medbh McGuckian. Each one is treated with careful attention to individual characteristics, but also with a particularly enlightening survey of their relationship to the social, political and literary developments during the latter half of the twentieth century on both sides of the border.
