Introduction

In this special issue, we explore issues of form, which we understand both in the broadest sense of the word – anything can be form, after all – but also in the specific sense in which Victorian popular fiction existed. More specifically, we want to explore how form and function interact in the case of Victorian popular fiction; how these are mutually enabling and constitutive. Indeed, we suggest in this collection of essays that Victorian popular fiction cannot be thought of without this combined attention to content, format and readership.
