Despite many attempts at re-mapping Romanticism, William Hazlitt seems to have fallen into oblivion, and together with various other so-called minor Romantics like Lamb, Landor or Clare, is still counted among the marginal figures of the early 19th centu ry. Biographies from Herschel Baker’s (1962) to Stanley Jones’s (1989) have neither considerably contributed to a re-evaluation of Hazlitt nor rescued him from the obscurity to which he is frequently consigned, when literary criticism exclusively concentrates on canonical writers like Wordsworth, the Shelleys, Keats and Byron.
