The principal manuscript associated with the great survey of England instigated by William the Conqueror in 1085, Great Domesday, together with two other closely related ones, Little Domesday and Exon Domesday, are justly famous in the English-speaking world. However, that a manuscript is famous does not mean that it is well understood, and this is certainly true of all three of the Domesday manuscripts and the texts that they contain.
