Diderot face aux barbares

Cet article examine l’approche que Diderot fait des notions de « barbare » et de « barbarie » dans son œuvre. L’attitude de Diderot sur ces points est complexe, et l’article examine plus particulièrement trois points : la relation paradoxale entre civilisation et barbarie, et l’influence de Montaigne sur Diderot (l’Europe « civilisée » est plus « barbare » que les sociétés dites « barbares », qui sont en fait plus proches de la nature); la relation paradoxale entre Diderot et Catherine II (libératrice ou despote ? Comment « civiliser » la Russie ?); le paradoxe qui fait que les temps « barbares » sont plus favorables à la poésie que ceux de l’Europe « civilisée » des Lumières.

This article examines Diderot’s understanding of the notions of ‹ barbarous › and ‹ barbarism › across a wide range of his works. Diderot’s attitude to the question is complex, and the article looks at three aspects: the paradoxical relationship between civilization and barbarism and Diderot’s debt to Montaigne (‹ civilized › Europe is more ‹ barbarous › than ‹ barbarous › societies, which are in fact more ‹ natural ›); the paradoxical relationship between Diderot and Catherine II (is she a liberator or a despot? Which way to ‹ civilize › Russia?); the paradoxical relationship between ‹ barbarous › times and the production of poetry: barbarous times (here relating to periods of violence not ‹ primitive › versus ‹ advanced ›) are more favorable to poetry than times of enlighten ment of ‹ civilized › Europe.
