Although a majority of Britons realise now that Brexit was an act of intentional selfharm, for many academics in English Studies outside the United Kingdom, Brexit has paradoxically turned into a gift that keeps on giving. Perhaps to combat the impression that their expertise was not really in demand in debates on the issue, they have devised numerous conferences, colloquia and publications on Brexit, its historical and ideological contexts and likely effects on Britain and the rest of the globe. The collection of essays in question results from such an endeavour, the biannual conference of the Swiss Association of University Teachers of English (SAUTE) on nation and identity, held at the University of Basel in 2019.
