The contents of this impeccably researched and highly readable study far exceed the promise of its title, unless, that is, the reader anticipates the extent to which “the literary marketplace” encompasses almost all of young Lawrence’s acquaintance: his female friends play leading roles, including relatively neglected figures such as Blanche Jennings, Louie Burrows, Violet Hunt and Rachel Annand Taylor, alongside his male mentors and publishers, from Ford Madox Hueffer and Edward Garnett to the lesser-known Eddie Marsh and Mitchell Kennerley. Not all the key protagonists are name-checked in the chapter titles, however, which might limit the reach of this book more than it deserves.
