Novellas: Experimentation and Purpose
Scholarship on the anglophone novella has remained a “desert area” since Mary Doyle Springer (among others) highlighted the limited research on the form in the 1970s. Morgan Day Frank reflects that perhaps the novella “is only capable of inspiring notes that accumulate but never coalesce into a totalizing theory”. Despite sporadic essays, the anglophone novella as form is often overlooked.
