Caroline M. Barron: London in the Later Middle Ages. Government and People 1200–1500.

In 1374, Geoffrey Chaucer, esquire of the king’s household, was appointed controller of the wool custom and was granted the rent-free lease of a dwelling above Aldgate in the city of London. In return, he had to keep the gate in a state of good repair and to arrange to have it garrisoned in case of emergency.
